Rev. Johnny Paton Memorial Fund

The Rev. Johnny Paton Fund is intended to help children and young people up to 21 years of age overcome financial barriers to taking part in educational or training activities

Rev. Johnny Paton was a passionate advocate for all his parishioners and in particular for children and young people. This fund was set up after Johnny died doing something he loved, walking on the hills of the Highlands, which he often joked took him closer to God! The fund focuses on the following priorities:

• Outdoor Education: Applications for outdoor pursuits, e.g., for residential outward-bound courses or mountain leadership training would be considered as Johnny enjoyed the outdoors.
• Higher Education or Training: Johnny would have been keen to support young people seeking to go to college or university, or to gain a formal apprenticeship. Bursary applications for college or university courses, or costs for an employer wishing to take on an apprentice would be considered, for example, to help with paying the apprentice whilst he/she is at college and not working for the company.
• Traditional Music: Johnny was particularly interested in Scottish traditional music and singing, Gaelic language and culture and classical music. Applications for short term residential courses or longer-term college or university courses would be considered.

Eligibility

• Applications are invited from or on behalf of individuals
• Applicants should be no more than 21 years of age
• Applicants need to show evidence of permanent residence on Mull, Iona, Ulva, Gometra or Erraid

Information and Guidance

• Grants of up to £1,000 are available to individuals
• Successful applicants must complete reporting forms post funding and provide proof of purchases with receipts and a breakdown of spending
• Each application will be reviewed on an individual basis
• Applications should provide information on what expenditure is for
• If awarded, you will be expected to spend the grant within 12 months and provide evidence of how it has been used
• Beneficiaries can only be awarded one grant
• Grants are not available retrospectively
